Adeola Lawal – Barcodes

As a student with Polish heritage, I wanted to use this topic title to further my understanding of the horrors of the Holocaust, sadly an event in history deeply associated with my motherland. Keen to further my understanding, and also take first hand photographs, I visited the concentration camp Auschwitz Birkenau during February half term. This deeply moving experience inspired my developing ideas as I drew parallels, not only of the barcode esq nature of the infamous striped pyjamas, but also of the nazi branding of tattooing barcodes on the camp detainees. My final outcome, created in the 15 hours, takes inspiration from what I’d learned but also inspired by the work of Pat Perry.
