Jude Dayman – Industrialisation

Building on my successes in Y11 and Y12, particularly in printmaking, I began the unit producing observational screen prints of Yorkshire Mills. As a student keen on history, I became interested in some of the stories of some of the Mill workers who had answered the call to sign-up during the two World Wars. Otto Dix, a famous German artist, had done the same and answered the Kaiser’s call in WW1. Dix survived the war, producing many harrowing works inspired by his experiences in the trenches. A series of prints he created in 1923 and 1924 titled “Der Krieg” (The War) became key inspiration for my developing ideas along with the experimental mixed media work of American Pop artist Robert Rauschenberg.
